Vanderbilt University Medical Center Post-Graduate Year One/Post-Graduate Year Two (PGY1/PGY2) Health-System Pharmacy Administration (HSPA) Residency program is a 24 month, full-time residency. The VUMC PGY1/PGY2 residency program is currently in pre-candidate status with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, therefore it follows the required goals and objectives set forth by ASHP in addition to the required goals/objectives of the residency program.
The purpose of the residency is to develop a pharmacist with the skills and abilities to enter practice at the supervisory level and progress to the director of pharmacy level. The mission of the first year of the program is to meet all of the requirements of a traditional PGY1 Pharmacy residency program, including development of a core skill set in drug information and literature evaluation, pharmacotherapy evaluation and management, project based research and team functioning, pharmacy operations, presentation development and delivery, and direct patient interaction.
A broad range of experiences are incorporated into the residency curriculum. The focus is on clinical rotations in direct patient care settings. Residents also gain experience in pharmacy administration, medication use system, automation, drug distribution, drug information and research pharmacy projects that are designed to improve patient care quality and safety.
The ASHP Residency Learning System and PharmAcademic are used extensively, which offers the resident a tailored, personalized and progressive learning experience throughout the year.
Required clinical experiences include internal medicine and two critical care medicine rotations, but there are a variety of acute care electives available, including cardiology, infectious diseases, nutrition support, solid organ transplantation, oncology, pediatrics, and others.
Research: The resident will draft a manuscript of their research project that is suitable for publication.
Staffing/ On Call: The staffing requirements vary, but the resident will gain extensive experience in pharmacy operations throughout the year.
Teaching: Residents will have the opportunity to gain teaching experience and will assist with precepting Doctor of Pharmacy candidates from various institutions. An optional teaching certificate provided by one of the three local colleges of pharmacy may be obtained during the residency.
Presentations: There will be opportunities for the resident to gain experience in giving formal presentations throughout the year to pharmacy staff, as well as to Medical Center staff.
The second year (PGY2) of this two-year program will concentrate on developing management and leadership skills necessary to lead teams and departments, as well as development of new programs.
Vanderbilt also offers PGY2 specialty residencies in Cardiology, Critical Care, Infectious Disease, Informatics, Oncology, Pediatrics, and Solid Organ Transplant. PGY2 specialty residencies require the successful completion of a PGY-1 residency year. Applicants should possess their pharmacy degree (Pharm. D. preferred).
