Responsible for performing comprehensive polysomnographic (sleep) testing, analysis, and associated interventions plus scoring under the general supervision of the Medical Director (MD, PhD, DO). Responsible for serving as a preceptor and mentor to staff.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
*Collect, analyze and integrate patient information such as pertinent medical/social history, physical findings/limitations, medications, etc. with the orders as written by the Sleep Physician to determine final testing parameters/procedures within center protocols.
*Performs patient intake according to sleep protocol such as: vital signs, height and weight, EKG and patient circumferences. Documents all information in the sleep system and recognizes and reports defined abnormal findings. Performs first aid and CPR as required.
*Provides instruction to the patient on the study to be performed and orients the patient to the sleep center.
*Prepares and calibrates equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and makes adjustments, if necessary.
*Applies electrodes and sensors according to published standards and performs appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and makes adjustments, if necessary.
*Follows center protocols to establish baseline values and to verify integrity of the collected data.
*Identify all sleep stages and sleep related events according to established criteria viewed on a multiple-channel, real-time computerized polysomnographic recording.
*Performs polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study- tracing quality to ensure signals are artifactfree and makes adjustments, as necessary such as replacing or adjusting electrodes.
*Documents comprehensive observations including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
*Implements appropriate interventions for patient safety and therapeutic interventions such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc. *Demonstrates age specific skills necessary to provide care to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
*Discharges patients post testing according to protocol and is responsible for cleaning equipment.
*Scores sleep records by interpreting stages of sleep or wakefulness by applying professionally accepted standards.
*Assists in identifying and documents any unusual or unique changes in the polygraphic patterns which are outside the normal all-night sleep patterns.
*Records each change in sleep stage or wakefulness together with the accompanying page or time. Documents information appropriately. *Generates accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
*Acts as a preceptor, mentor and teacher to trainees and less experienced staff and may be responsible for supervising the practice of new, part time and less experience staff. Participates in research projects supervised by the Departments that practice in the Sleep Research and Treatment Center.
*Performs other duties as assigned.
*High school diploma or equivalent plus 18 months of experience working as a Sleep Technician required.
*Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist required.
