Job Summary: Under the leadership of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean, the Associate Dean for Preclinical Education is administratively responsible for Years I and II of the Curriculum. The Associate Dean for Preclinical Education serves as the administrative head of the basic science faculty and oversees Student Affairs.
Specific Job Functions:
The Associate Dean is responsible for the first and second year pre-clinical education programs.
The Associate Dean is responsible for having an intimate knowledge of all aspects of the first and second year curriculum and should meet regularly with the curriculum chair and the course coordinators to provide leadership, vision, support, and oversight in order to ensure the development and implementation of a non-redundant, relevant, “cutting-edge” curriculum.
Establishes the schedule of class presentations in consultation with course coordinators
Recruits and arranges for all visiting lecturers and other support personnel for lectures, presentations, and teaching labs with the exception of OPP in the first two years of the curriculum.
Provides leadership and direction for all programs and activities related to Student Affairs.
Develops and publishes curricular schedules for the first two years of the academic program.
Works with the Associate Dean for Assessment and Educational Development in the evaluation and assessment process for all courses.
Responsible for calculating credit hours for all courses in Years 1 and 2.
Maintains course syllabi for COCA and HLC visitation teams.
Oversees the teaching facilities on the WVSOM campus.
Helps lead the faculty in the design and definition of the pre-clinical curriculum and in the development of educational policy consistent with the mission of the School
Supervises the Department Of Biomedical Sciences Chairperson.
Supervises Preclinical Education office staff.
Works with the Director of OSCE programs for the development and implementation of the 2nd year OSCE programs.
Spends time reviewing current literature in order to recommend implementation of new and innovative curricular programs to the faculty and the VP for Academic Affairs and Dean, in order to assure that WVSOM maintains a “cutting edge” educational program
Shares with the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean, the Associate Dean for Predoctoral Clinical Education, and the Chief Student Affairs Officer the responsibility for student guidance, counseling, and discipline.
Monitors academic performance for all students during the first two years of the curriculum.
Works with the other deans, evaluates, counsels, and advises faculty in meeting their responsibilities.
Works closely with the Associate Dean for Osteopathic Medical education to develop and implement a structured, integrated OP&P curriculum throughout Years 1 and 2 of the curriculum.
Prepares and administers the budget for the Preclinical Education Department
Approves purchases of supplies and equipment and maintains purchase records
Serves as ex-officio member of the WVSOM Student Promotions, OPP Integration and Curriculum Committees; serves as chair of the Textbook Affordability Committee and the Academic Policy Workgroup.
Responsible for knowledge of all AOA, AACOM and HLC requirements for accreditation
Is an active member of the President’s Forum, Dean’s Council, and Dean’s Advisory Council, and Student Learning Assessment Workgroup.
Attends faculty meetings when invited.
Teaches and facilitates as requested by the VP for Academic Affairs and Dean.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
This is a full time faculty position and is exempt for FLSA provisions regarding overtime. There is an excellent state benefits package including relocation. Salary and faculty rank is commensurate with education and experience. Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of an 8:00-4:30 schedule and will require regular evening and weekend scheduling. Some travel including overnight travel is required.

Education and Experience
Earned Doctorate Degree
A minimum of 5 years of experience in academic administration and medical education.
The candidate should have a working knowledge of curriculum planning, implementation and assessment.
If degree is Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) it must be from a COCA accredited college of osteopathic medicine. Candidate must be board certified and must be licensed or eligible for a current license to practice osteopathic medicine in the State of West Virginia.
The successful candidate will have strong leadership skills and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
A combination of recent and related experience and education may be considered.
